TRJ Construction Ltd created this insulated garden gym in Ashtead, Surrey, combining a contemporary charcoal exterior with a bright, open-plan interior. Designed as a dedicated space for exercise at home, the building brings together full-height black glazing, a reinforced base and integrated LG heating and cooling.

The approximately 5.15 m × 4 m external footprint makes room for a separate training space within the garden. Inside, white walls, recessed lighting and wood-effect Howdens laminate flooring give the room a clean, welcoming finish, ready for the owner’s choice of equipment and layout.

Key Features & Specifications

Insulated SIP construction from the floor to the roof

The structure uses Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), with 125 mm external wall panels and 150 mm panels to both the floor and roof. Insulation is built into the structural envelope, supporting a garden room designed for use throughout the year.

For this project, the screw-pile foundation system was upgraded to 1,550 mm piles. The floor and base construction were also reinforced to accommodate heavy loads and equipment. These details were part of the project’s construction specification, giving the gym a considered structural starting point as well as a polished finish.

Charcoal composite cladding with a crisp modern finish

Deluxe brushed charcoal composite cladding finishes the front and side elevations, with matching trims creating a consistent appearance around the building. The dark exterior sits comfortably alongside the black doors and windows, while the horizontal cladding lines emphasise the room’s contemporary shape.

The rear elevation has a different construction detail: fire-retardant Magply boards finished with a K Rend silicone render system. A front canopy completes the entrance and incorporates three external LED downlights.

Full-height black glazing and garden views

The frontage combines a central French-door set with fixed glazed panels on either side. Specially designed PVC-U frames are black inside and out, with coordinated transom bars creating a distinctive grid across the doors and windows.

Full-height side windows extend the garden views around the corners of the room. Each side window includes an opening top section for ventilation. Together, the front and side glazing bring natural light into the gym and keep the interior visually connected to its surroundings.

LG heating and cooling for year-round use

A 2.5 kW LG Mirror AI air-conditioning system provides heating and cooling, allowing the room’s temperature to be adjusted for the season and the activity. Its mirrored front panel fits neatly into the finished interior.

Combined with the SIP construction and opening side windows, the system supports a comfortable, practical space for regular use, whether the room is being prepared for an early workout or cooled after exercise.

A finished interior with practical electrical details

Howdens laminate flooring brings a warm wood-effect finish to the room, complemented by white skirting, painted walls and eight recessed internal LED downlights. Black electrical fittings coordinate with the glazing, with brass-coloured switches and integrated USB charging visible in the finished socket details.

The electrical specification includes four internal double sockets. Power is supplied from the house through approximately 40 m of armoured cable, with a separate garden-room consumer unit, surge protection and RCBO protection.
