Structural Insulated Panels – A Practical Perspective from TRJ Construction Ltd

When clients come to TRJ Construction Ltd, they rarely ask for “a SIP panel.”

They ask for a warm room.
A comfortable annexe for a parent.
A garden office that works in January, not just in July.

But behind every comfortable space is an invisible system — the building envelope.
And the quality of that envelope determines everything: temperature stability, condensation risk, energy use, acoustic calm, and long-term durability.

That is why we specialise in Structural Insulated Panel construction.

Not because it is fashionable.
But because, when properly specified, it is one of the most intelligent structural systems available for small-scale residential buildings in the UK.

Understanding SIPs Beyond the Marketing

A Structural Insulated Panel is often described simply as:

Two structural OSB boards
Bonded to a rigid insulation core

Technically true — but incomplete.

A SIP panel behaves as a composite structural element. The OSB skins act like the flanges of an I-beam. The insulated core acts as the web. Together, they form a single load-bearing unit.

This is fundamentally different from traditional timber frame, where structure and insulation are separate layers.

With SIPs:

Structure and insulation are engineered together.
Performance is built in, not added later.

At TRJ Construction Ltd, we approach SIP construction as a structural system first — and a garden building second.

Thickness – Where Performance Begins

One of the biggest misunderstandings in the market is thickness.

You will often see:

100mm wall panels
125mm wall panels
150mm wall panels

And many entry-level garden buildings are built using 100mm walls and 100mm roofs.

Technically, that is insulated.
But insulation is not a yes-or-no characteristic. It is a level of resistance.

A 100mm EPS wall may sit around 0.30–0.35 W/m²K.
A 125mm wall drops closer to 0.23–0.28.
A 150mm panel can move toward 0.18–0.22.

Switch the core to foam-injected PUR or PIR, and performance improves further per millimetre — often reaching into the 0.13–0.17 range depending on the full build-up.

That difference translates into something very real:

A space that heats quickly but loses heat quickly
Versus
A space that maintains temperature stability through winter

At TRJ Construction Ltd, we typically specify:

125mm structural wall panels
150mm roof panels
150mm insulated base systems

Because our aim is not seasonal comfort — it is year-round usability.

We do not reduce thickness to reduce cost.
We engineer performance to increase long-term value.

EPS vs Foam-Injected PUR/PIR – The Core of the Matter

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is widely used. It is stable, cost-effective, and adequate for many structures.

But foam-injected PUR/PIR cores are denser and thermally more efficient per millimetre due to lower thermal conductivity.

Lower lambda value means lower heat transfer.

In practical terms:

For the same thickness, PUR/PIR will usually achieve a better U-value than EPS.
Or
For the same performance target, PUR/PIR allows a thinner structural build-up.

Beyond thermal resistance, foam-injected systems often provide:

Higher compressive strength
Improved dimensional stability
Better bonding consistency
Enhanced fire classification depending on specification

When we design annexes intended for full-time residential use, these differences are not academic. They directly influence comfort, heating demand, and long-term structural behaviour.

Airtightness – The Multiplier of Performance

Insulation without airtightness is compromised insulation.

Warm air escaping and cold air infiltrating can undermine even the best panel specification.

SIP construction, when installed correctly and sealed properly at joints, creates:

Fewer leakage pathways
Reduced draughts
Lower uncontrolled heat loss
Improved acoustic isolation

This is one of the reasons clients often describe our buildings as “solid” or “stable.”

It is not simply thickness.
It is controlled air movement and continuous insulation.

At TRJ Construction Ltd, junction detailing, vapour control layers, and membrane integration are treated as structural priorities — not afterthoughts.

Structural Strength – More Than Just Insulation

A SIP panel distributes load across its entire surface. Unlike traditional stud walls, which rely on repeated vertical timber members, SIPs reduce internal framing and allow for cleaner structural spans.

This results in:

Greater rigidity
Reduced deflection
Improved long-term stability
Cleaner internal layouts

For garden annexes and extensions, that rigidity matters. Structures that move less crack less. And buildings that crack less last longer.

Thermal Comfort Is Not Just About Bills

Energy efficiency is important, but comfort is broader than heating costs.

A well-specified SIP building offers:

Stable internal surface temperatures
Reduced cold spots
Lower condensation risk
Improved acoustic dampening

Combined with high-quality cladding systems and internal linings, this creates an environment suitable for:

Home offices
Granny annexes
Therapy rooms
Music rooms
Full residential living

This is why we position ourselves not simply as garden room builders — but as SIP specialists.

Because the difference is in the envelope.

The Difference Between “Garden Room” and “Engineered Living Space”

Many systems on the market are designed to meet a price point.

100mm walls
100mm roofs
Basic EPS cores
Painted board finishes

Those structures serve a purpose.

But when you compare that to:

125mm or 150mm structural walls
150mm roof panels
High-performance core insulation
Engineered foundations (screw piles or reinforced slab)
K-Render or premium composite finishes
Full electrical integration
Building control compliance where required

You are comparing two different philosophies.

One is a structure placed in a garden.

The other is an engineered thermal envelope designed for real living.

At TRJ Construction Ltd, our focus is long-term structural and thermal integrity — particularly across North London and the Home Counties where winter performance matters.

Cost-Effective and Sustainable Solutions

What are SIP panels? SIP panels are wooden panels with a foam core. SIP actually stands for Structural Insulated Panels which means that these panel are warmer than any brick wall. SIP panels are also stronger, more durable and cheaper than any other wall or panel. These panels can last around 60 years! Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) are

entirely recyclable and consist of two parallel faces of Orientated Strand Board (OSB) sandwiching a rigid core

of expanded polystyrene. The result is a strong composite offering a high axial load capacity, with excellent insulation

properties. Cold bridging is minimised with the boards being interlocked and thus reducing the air or heat loss

between them therefore providing an friendly  structure  that cuts energy bills and greatly reduces green house emissions (Co2.) In all, up to 35% fewer raw materials are used in SIP buildings.
